Taking on the 21 Bends: Intrinsic tackles iconic Alpe d’Huez Triathlon

curve

We’re proudly cheering on two inspiring members of Team Intrinsic as they tackle one of Europe’s most iconic endurance events—the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon.

Chris Roberts, Managing Director of Intrinsic Facilities Engineering, and Matthew Cox are competing in a test of physical and mental resilience.

At time of posting, Matthew was 6 hours into the long course event, Triathlon L. The route includes a 2.2km swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lac du Verney, followed by a 118km bike ride featuring over 3,200m of ascent and culminating in the legendary 21 bends of the Alpe d’Huez (13.9km at an average gradient of 8%). As if that wasn’t enough, it finishes with a challenging 19.2km run comprising 3 loops of a mixed-terrain course and an additional 100m climbing per loop.

Chris competes in the shorter but no less challenging Triathlon M. His 1.5km swim promises to be as fast as it is intense. The 28km cycle route is split in two parts: a short 15km ride along the stunning valley between Lac du Verney and Bourg d’Oisans followed by the famous 21 bends of the Alpe d’Huez. At an altitude of 1800m and taking 100m of ascent, the final 6.4km run loop boasts some of the most stunning vistas in the resort.

Taking part in an event of this nature requires not just physical commitment but a mindset built on discipline, determination, and a willingness to push the boundaries of what’s achievable —qualities that reflect the ethos of Intrinsic.

Chris and Matthew’s participation is a celebration of the drive to challenge what’s possible, and a reminder that ambition and inspiration extend far beyond the workplace. We’re in awe of their commitment, and we’ll be following their progress with admiration and pride.

Good luck, Chris and Matthew from everyone at Intrinsic!
